Hello, Becks and "Beck's Back Porch" denizens!
I hope this is where I can ask a question. If not, please accept my apology for cluttering your site. On the other hand, if it is, cool beans! Even after lurking 'round just a little bit of your site, I feel (at the risk of sounding corny) at home.
I like the site; I love English %u2014 reading; discussions that take the form of engaging in a dialectic; asking for, and offering, constructive criticism; and generally, the open exchange of ideas. I aspire to be assertive %u2014 open, honest, direct and respectful %u2014 and I hope for the same from others. Additionally, an "appropriate" amount of banter and repartee would be a refreshing respite from heated discussions of such weighty matters as, say, the (metaphysical) subject/object paradox.
Oh yeah, my question; which is correct?
Uh oh%u2026while typing this, I was intermittently checking assorted references and found the answer myself. And whaddya know, I was right all along. Ya know, as they always told us, "You're first answer is usually the correct one."
Sorry to have bothered you, while I should have done my own legwork in the first place. Nevertheless, I'd jump at the opportunity to join your august body. You already know a bunch about me %u2014 what's left? Thirty years in printing; 15 producing newspapers and 15 more designing high-quality, sheetfed printing pieces. I've written, edited, typeset, proofread, laid out and designed everything from board games to bumper stickers; from annual reports to daily newspapers; and everything betwixt.
Well, that's a piece o'me. Can I hop in the sandbox and play with youse? I promise to play nice Thanks in advance for your time and consideration. Hmm%u2026from poking around it seems I gotta contact Ms. Becks to see if'n I kin join yer class. Wish me luck. If it costs to take a class, don't bother wishin' me luck%u2026send dough instead. Later.

Do you think that sports help develop good character? Discuss

Sport can not only be used to enhance ones physical condition, but also play an important role in the development of people%u2019s character. Sports clubs provide an environment where different races, personalities, and beliefs can come together %u2013 an environment where a person cannot fail to develop their character. Through the social interaction of teammates, the leadership of coaches, and the level of competition on game day, belonging to a sports club and taking part in sport is a great way of developing great character.
Sports teams bring people together, which, apart from the physical side, lets people interact with one another. This unity helps people develop social skills which will benefit other aspects of their lives and not merely a process of taking instructions for a football formation or position on the baseball field. People interact with others of varying personalities. This interaction, for a young person, lets them see, sometimes for the first time, the diversity of different persona.
The leadership of a coach plays an important role in shaping ones personality. In a way, coaches are likes parents to a young person growing up. A coach has an authority over an athlete which some parents may not enjoy %u2013 an authority to drop an individual from a team if they step out of line. When applied correctly, this instills discipline in athletes, which is highly beneficial in all aspects of life. A coach also acts as an important role model, someone an athlete can look up to, and someone who can set an example of how to conduct themselves outside the security of their own home. If the coach / athlete relationship lasts long enough an athlete can have a friend who is not like other friends of similar age, and can learn maturity and trust form someone of greater experience than themselves. In return, a coach can see his junior friend as someone to keep him young, someone he can guide, and learn from for himself. In this kind of situation, the character of both individuals cannot fail to develop.
Apart from the interpersonal side, it is ideal when young boys get the chance to become men. One can learn a lot about people and who they really are on match days as well as how talented they are at sport. Golf as an example is possibly the most revealing of all sports in terms of how mentally strong someone is and how they think. It is also revealing how they react to the pressure of a competitive situation. To people in an observing role, it conveys how mature athletes really are. It is also interesting to witness boys compete not just in a comfort zone against teams who they can easily overcome, but against better teams. The athlete has the option to lie down and let the opposition dominate, beaten before the final whistle, or the option to grind away, play for pride, and never give up %u2013 true character development in itself.
In addition to the argument that sport develops good character, it is somewhat ironic that, a football team for example, can get together and play for years and not achieve what they set out to accomplish, but subconsciously all develop far more as individuals than players through social interaction, teamwork, and camaraderie.
